YWTC Welcomes Cops and Kids
For the second year in a row, our Club opened its doors to the kids of Weston with the help of ProAction Cops and Kids, a community outreach program led by Community Officer Alex BENYI (12 Division at Trethewey & Black Creek) in conjunction with Frontlines and Weston Community Hub.
Four weekday sessions were held: May 5th, August 2nd, 11th, and 16th with some 30 kids attending each 90 min-long session.
Generous corporate sponsors donated brand new equipment (tennis racquets, mini-nets, and all types of progressive tennis balls (red/orange and green dot).
In his previous life, Alex was with Tennis Canada where he coached in the National Junior Program, and is a Certified Coach 3 (somewhat of a rarity).

Michael McDonald 2022 Bursary
The late Michael McDonald, a long-time YWTC member, established a bursary to be used by YWTC to promote tennis among BIPOC kids in the Weston community.
Jashia HADWAY and Ugonna ACHONWA. two of the participants in the ProAction Tennis community outreach program, so impressed Head Pro Sulley and Constalbe Alex Benyi with their enthusiasm and talent that they earned recommendations for the Michael McDonald Bursary.
The Bursary paid for Summer Day Camp registration for the above-named two youths.

Congrats to Kelly DOWUONA !
We watched Kelly DOWUONA grow up on the courts of YWTC so to hear the news that she earned an athletic scholarship to attend Saint Francis University makes us especially happy and proud.
As a member of the SFU's Red Flash Tennis Team, Kelly now competes in the NCAA Division I (Northeast Conference).
In her collegiate debut for the in Loretto, Pennsylvania university, Kelly won three singles matches and made an appearance in the Women's "A" Bracket Championship before she fell 2-6, 3-6 in the finals. She went 2-1 in doubles and finished 5-2 in her collegiate-opening weekend. What a great start!
We wish Kelly all the best in her athletic and academic pursuits!

2020 Clubhouse Makeover

Club President, Bob McDonald, pays tribute to Mary McCarthy who led the charge on our Clubhouse Makeover during the COVID summer of 2020.
Mary persisted in the heat and with a shoestring budget to convert our Clubhouse into a fresh and fun setting for all to enjoy. Take note of that awesome flooring she is standing on!
Of course Mary was supported by a team of hardworking and dedicated volunteers. Mary has documented their many contributions below.

Of course Mary was supported by a team of hardworking and dedicated volunteers. Mary has documented their many contributions below.

Jon Holmes and Mike Devereux : The clubhouse painting just couldn’t have gotten off the ground or completed without the guidance and hard work of new members and volunteers master painter Jon Holmes and his good friend Mike Devereux, experienced renovator! Jon provided a lot of his own tools and he and Mike put in countless hours, prepping, repairing and painting, all the while teaching us novices! Many hours were saved with Jon using his sprayer to do the exterior walls and interior ceiling. They both shared the vision that the cute clubhouse could be great!

Joe Scarfo : Joe volunteered right away and put in many hours selflessly doing the prep and painting, in particular on the interior. His claim to fame is the feature wall and all the beautiful doors and trim in the clubhouse! And oh yes, he is a great Whistler when he works!

Nancy Raymond : I think my Women of Weston teammate just felt sorry for me. What have you signed yourself up to do !? Many hours painting the exterior, deck railings, exterior benches and watering the landscape and flowers when needed. She also generously lent her power washer to us for the deep clean.

Susan Martin : A Women of Weston teammate and again in the category of feeling sorry for me. With kids at home and a daughter getting married in August, she still managed to come out and help paint the exterior, including those low hard to reach spots!

Jully Lowry : another Women of Weston teammate who rose to the call .... even though she was already out with a shoulder/arm injury! Now that’s dedication.

Binh!-Scraping the exterior of a building, especially the back of the club house in the beating sun, high on a ladder is hard work. Binh was up for the challenge!

Bill McHorgh : Bill I basically stalked each morning until he generously did some rail painting and bench taping. Now he runs the other way when he sees me :)

Liz Van Wonderen and Wendy Yen : Our Women of Weston Captain and one of our new teammates. Both busy with kids and working, but both managed to help prep, prime and paint the small, hot bathrooms... in the middle of summer! Not an easy task. I hope I’m invited back to the team.

Walter Kikhard - as I stared and pondered at how best to scrape and then paint the large hitting wall, not looking forward to the enormity of the task, Walter came to the rescue. Without hesitation he jumped in to scrape down the wall, tape the hitting line and put 2 coats of paint on. Not afraid of heights, he quickly was up on the ladder to do the 2nd coat of paint high up exterior wall above the porch.
Sulley’s kids (Kelly, Karen, Keith), day camp instructor Leshia and JoJo, day camp participant : they come as a team! Most afternoons when they had finished their clinics, finished their lunch and were just hanging out .... that’s when I would pounce! “Want to help to paint picnic tables, benches and the deck? First time they were enthusiastic. Next time ... once they saw how much work it was, less so :), but they always said yes or gladly asked if I needed help, persevering with a laugh and a smile! I know I had fun. We also managed to rescue 2 racoons from the garbage can! That’s a story unto itself.
Lorella Zanchetta - when the final call went out for volunteers, Lorella generously offered. The work wasn’t glamorous - window sill cleaning, window cleaning and kitchen cleaning. After many years of no cleaning, not an easy job. Imagine my surprise when she arrived limping, in a foot cast, but still keen to chip in!
Tony Bruno - many afternoons Tony could be found battling it out on the court in the heat of the day against his buddy Ted. Turns out Tony is very handy! He generously gave of his time to repair the deck, give it a light sanding and repair the larger holes in the exterior walls. He was rewarded with a wasp sting which thankfully he recovered from nicely
Wes Rupel and Mike Pezzack - the strength behind carrying and clearing out the heavy furniture in the Clubhouse.

Kelly Dowuona: Rising Junior Star at YWTC
All of us at York Weston are extremely proud of Kelly Dowuona (daughter of Club Head Pro Sulley) for her amazing accomplishments on the junior provincial and national tours this summer. Kelly is not yet eleven years old, but last week she got to the semi-final of the Roman Cup in Ottawa (a National Junior Open Series Event) in the Under 12 category. Along the way she defeated the number 2 seed in straight sets. Her semi-final match score was 6-7, 6-1, 10-12, so this was clearly a competitive match that could have gone either way. Earlier this summer, Kelly won (6-1, 6-0) the Under 12 event at the Ontario Grass Court Championships in Adjala. At this same tournament, Kelly reached the final in the Under 14 category where she lost in a very competitive three set match.
Kelly’s impressive performance this summer is the result of her dedication and hard work on the practice courts. Obviously, her father’s superb coaching skills have played a large role in Kelly’s success as well. Several of her victories, it should be noted, were over players considerably older than she. Let’s continue to give our club’s support to Kelly and to take pride in her accomplishments.
